Interesting Fact: The Memphis Redbirds franchise, back in 1998, essentially “kicked out” the long-existing Memphis Chicks who, minus an absence from 1961-1977, called Memphis home since 1901. It’s quite a shame too. In this day and age where we’re trying to even out the gender imbalances we have in our society, it’s awful to see a team whose nickname honors women being removed from their home in favor of a team whose nickname honors the main bird from Angry Birds. I imagine if the team was called the Memphis Dudes the Redbirds wouldn’t have tried to move them out of their home.
