The BC Lions have announced the signing of a local sea lion Monday morning to a rookie contract following the release of a video that has since gone viral.

Hubert Lion, who lives in Steveston, was caught on video Sunday demonstrating his tackling skills on a Chinese girl next to a dock near the Steveston Fisherman’s Wharf. The video has since caught viral with Lion catching the eyes of the Lions coaching staff in the process.

According to Lion, who states he is a lifelong Lions fan, he only demonstrated his tackling skills on a unsuspecting girl one he saw another pedestrian was videotaping him.

“I needed a new clip for my highlight reel,” stated Lion. “I wanted something to show to teams that demonstrated my elite tackling skills. Once I get ahold of someone in the open field, he’s going down. I apologize for getting that little Chinese girl caught up in all of this. It’s what I had to do in order to stand out from the crowd.”

The Lions were quick to sign Lion to a one-year contract at the rookie minimum salary following the video’s viral release. While it remains to be seen how Lion’s little girl tackling skill will translate to the CFL, team officials are optimistic that Lion has hidden potential.

“Lion is certainly in unorthodox pickup for the Lions,” said Lions head coach and general manager Wally Buono. “Once we get him into camp, we’re going to see where he can fit in. Given his current weight and lack of agility in the open field, he’s either going to be a defensive end or defensive tackle. We’ll know more once we get him into pads.”

The BC Lions’s first game of the 2017 CFL preseason is June 6th against the Calgary Stampeders. Buono aims to have Lion acclimated to the Lion’s defense by then in order for him to see some game action.
